Covered Bridges
Covered Bridges are an integral part of New Brunswick's Heritage and the surviving structures are picturesque monuments which link us to the past.

The reason for covered bridges was a practical one. It was often believed that they were designed to keep snow off the bridge floor, but that was simply not the case. Covered bridges were built to protect the flooring and heavy timbers from the rotting effects of sun and rain. An uncovered bridge lasted only 10 years, while covered bridges could last well over 80 years.

Kings County has 16 of these timbered spans which still offer a glimpse of a simpler life in tune with nature. We offer more covered bridges than any other county in Atlantic Canada. Each one has its own personality that seemingly invites the observer to stop, rest awhile and enjoy the romance of the "Kissing Bridges".

More information on where you can find the Covered Bridges can be obtained at the Sussex And Area Tourist Information And Interpretive Centre at the Sussex Train Station and at the Sussex Visitor Information Centre at Four Corners, Sussex (Exit number 195) or by phone at (506) 433-2214 (seasonal).
